It’s been great to have members back in printing and to start having the buzz of creativity around the workshop. Everyone has been noticing all the big and little improvements we’ve made whilst everyone was away. We’ve not been putting our feet up. We’ve also got lots of new kit, such as 5 new Kippax screenbeds, a new water-bath, a bespoke large acid cabinet, new benching and inking tables and lots of smaller tweaks and improvements, plus the place has had a lick of paint making it brighter and looking even more spacious.

We are now steadily welcoming members back in. We have a booking system to limit numbers and make sure we are staying safe with that pesky coronavirus still lurking in the background. We shut at 4.00pm every day to be able to clean and sanitize the workshop top to bottom including all equipment and tools used. We also have windows open to keep an airflow and good ventilation and still have the rule of everyone wearing masks whilst in here, (unless you are on a screen bed or relief press facing away from anyone).

We will slowly and carefully open up to more members coming in and getting to the carefree way and creative way we were before March 2020 and we are looking to announce new courses and lots more exciting events in the coming weeks and months.

The great news is that we are still here, and going strong, and we look even better. Absence has made the heart grow fonder and we all realise a little more of what we have here at Hot Bed Press, this unique hub of printmaking in all it’s guises and manifestations. We aim to grow stronger and even better from here with ambitious plans for the future. Look out for news of our first exhibition of work by last year’s Complete Printmaker graduates on the ground floor, and also come up and see our current display of prints from the India Print Exchange Programme currently on show around the workshop.

Please keep supporting us in whatever way you can.

    Best wishes to all

A major exhibition at Salford Museum & Art Gallery
    26th May to 14th October 2018

by 4 artists working at Hot Bed Press:
Gwilym Hughes, Joey Collins, Claudia Alonso and Lubna Ali

Print UnLtd is an exhibition of works celebrating, challenging and questioning contemporary printmaking.

Supported by Art Collection; University of Salford, Salford Community Leisure and Arts Council England the exhibition was selected by a panel from an open submission call out for works that questioned pre-conceived ideas of what is a print and the conventions of how prints are made, displayed, interpreted and sold.

The 4 selected artists have been working over the past three months to create new bodies of work. The work will be shown in a specially adapted gallery in Salford Museum & Art Gallery.

There is a programme of accompanying workshops and talks at the gallery, starting with all 4 artists working in the gallery in a One Day Pop-up Print Academy on Wednesday 30th May 11.30am – 3.30pm, and available to discuss and show elements of how they created the works on display.

Hot Bed Press is really proud to be involved in this project and to be working in partnership with the University of Salford, Salford Museum & Art Gallery and Salford Community Leisure. We hope that this will be just the start of more major projects with the university and gallery that shed new light on printmaking and serve to make people think about what is a print and how far can we go with printmaking in the modern age.

We have just launched our latest course programme full of special courses, amazing tutors and all run in our fantastic facility. Running from 1st April through to 25th June we have tried to put something on to suit the tastes and needs of everyone. So whether you are new to printmaking or in need of a refresher and a bit of expert knowledge and inspiration this is the place for you.

Our courses are very popular, so much so that we often run extra courses to meet demand.

With courses such as Reduction Screenprint, Caustic Lino, Photo-etching, Building Books, Japanese Woodblock Printing and Adventures in Wooden Type it is a veritable feast of courses suitable for everyone.

Now that we have bought our, rather large, building we are also able to plan for improving our equipment and workshop space. Over the next few months we aim to expand the workshop and to buy new equipment and make improvements that will really start to transform Hot Bed Press.

Go to the courses section of our website for more.

But please beware that courses book up so quickly that it’s best to get in touch straight away. Don’t delay, do it today!

Thank you to all those who came to our summer print fair and print demonstrations, and a special thanks to the printmakers who had a stall.

We had a lovely day and had around 140 visitors, (which for a wet bank holiday weekend wasn’t bad at all). There were lots of lovely printed things for sale and it was good to see that even in tight financial times a number of stall holders did particularly well. Of course it is not just about sales and there was lots of people happy to get the chance to see what each other produces and exchange ideas, and contacts. I know a few links were made and plans hatched for other shows, which is great. The cakes and drinks are now consumed and the bunting that festooned the print rooms and all the way through to Cow Lane is now down until next time, (and we are considering a Christmas wayzgoose spectacular.. more details on that another time).

Particular thanks go to Jane Elliott, Martin Kochany and Elizabeth Willow for their great demonstrations on screenprinting, expressive print and letterpress on the Adana. We got another new crowd enthused about what we do and interested in coming to do more, which is what we like to see.

For some lovely pics on the wayzgoose visit Jane Elliott’s Leaf City Press Facebook page.

It was great to see us linked with Cow Lane Studios more with people milling through from Hot Bed to Cow Lane and with their studios open to visitors. We are working with Cow Lane more and more, and the Salford Open, organized by Cow Lane Studios, is due to open on 15th June. As Artistic Director of Hot Bed Press I am pleased to have been invited as one of the selectors, and Hot Bed Press are proud to be a sponsor and look forward to awarding a print prize to one lucky artist.
