Hot Bed Press is proud to announce our latest print spectacular. This is our biggest Summer programme to date and incorporates a special summer school of print, taking over the workshop for 2 full weeks and 3 weekends with some incredible guest tutors and tantalising techniques, plus our own staff will all be offering some of their expertise in their particular fields for intensive week long courses giving a real opportunity to learn, explore and develop new work.

    Summer School of Print

This summer we present you a very special school of print. We are really pleased to announce some special guest tutors invited from across the UK who are renowned experts in their chosen field of work and some print methods never seen before at Hot Bed Press

We are taking over the whole of the workshop for the first 2 weeks and 3 weekends in August. As well as guest tutors our expert staff will be leading the 5 day/weekday workshops demonstrating the breadth of their knowledge and enthusiasm for printmaking. Suitable for beginners and those wanting a full refresher each course will go into more depth than ever before on each process and bring in more advanced and involved ways of working.

Hot Bed Press will be setting up a print workshop in the museum & art gallery complete with etching press, inking plates, rollers and inks. This special Easter School is run to coincide with the Royal Society of Photographers show and presents a unique slant on the art of the photograph.

Each workshop is a short taster to the possibilities of marrying photography with printmaking. You will come away with a handful of prints and a thirst for more. The workshops are designed to be affordable and you can book a place for just £30.00 per session or if you’re quick you can book all 5 workshops for £110.00.

This week we have collected a really fantastic donation of Letterpress type, cases and equipment that has come via a couple of great guys, Peter and Stephen King, from just up the road in Salford.

The treasure trove of beautiful presses and type had been meticulously collected over the years by artist and teacher Roy Mewha who taught at Walkden High School. The equipment will slowly be introduced into the workshop to greatly improve our existing stock of type and presses.

The donation will add another 2 Adanas to our collection, plus we were seriously excited to find an electric Adana T/P48 under a blanket at the back of the shed. So if we can get that refurbished and back into use it will add a whole new dimension to the possibilities of our letterpress area.

We also collected 5 cabinets of type which now means we have a complete cabinet of wooden type, and once sorted, a complete cabinet of picture blocks, type high rules and decoration blocks.

Obviously we will need some time to sort, clean up and introduce the new stock, but it is a great find and for those of you interested in our new course, The Complete Letterpress Printer which launches in February 2016, this represents a fantastic addition to our letterpress area.

It’s that time of year again and our 20:20 Print Exchange is open for business. We have 36 print workshops so far wanting to take part, so it’s going to be another mammoth project.

The exchange is one of the largest print exchanges in Europe. This year we are really pleased to welcome Hey Ho print Co. from Middlesborough, Cumbria Printmakers and The Print Market Project from Cardiff. We are specially pleased to welcome Islensk Grafik from Reykjavik, Iceland as a guest international workshop.

We are also attracting interest from colleges and universities to join the throng. This year The University of Salford have incorporated it into their curriculum and The North Wales School of Art & Design are also taking for the first time. [Short Printmakers who are now taking part in the exchange for the second time are a collective of staff and students from Leeds College of Art & Design.] We are still focused on print workshops and supporting everything independent print workshops do, but it’s great to see universities getting involved and supporting undergraduates in printmaking to see the wealth of printmaking facilities and world of print outside of of the universities.

Our members are already starting to produce their prints; deadline for us to receive prints in is 1st November and then the task of sorting and boxing them all up gets under way. We hear that activity is also increasing on the exchange in workshops from Galway to Edinburgh.

    Be square!!

Our next lot of courses start in July. We already have bookings coming in and some courses are starting to look like booking up even before our leaflets and publicity machine burst into full swing.

The programme kicks off on Saturday & Sunday 4th & 5th July with Adanarama and Screenprinted Posters with Drawn To Print a special week long course hot on the heels. Guest tutor Kevin Holdaway will be running a Multi-colour Relief Printing weekend too on 11th & 12th July following on from his very popular talk here back in March.

There’s so much more on and with Lucy May Schofield flying in from Japan for some special courses and Andrew Hambleton [our latest artist-in-residence and winner of the Hot Bed Press prize at the National Open Print Exhibition in London] giving a bite-size [pardon the pun] etching day it’s bring in the new here. No course programme is the same.

Also new to Hot Bed is Printed Book Covers run by the dynamic duo of Kiran Williams and Mandy Tolley; 2 tutors for the price of 1.
