We will be selling a selection of beautiful hand made prints at this week’s Carbooty at Plant Noma & Sadlers Yard in the Shudehill area of Manchester. 12pm – 5pm

All prints £10! Come say hi, pick up a print and a course leaflet and chat to us about life and art.

    BY CAR:
As there is construction work going on down both sides streets, cars can not access the outdoor site directly. However you can pull your vehicle up to the side entrance of PLANT NOMA at the far end of Dantzic street (past the Shudehill bus depot) solely for dropping items off, and either myself or Charlie will be waiting at the top of the stairs to Sadler’s Yard to welcome you.

So the best place to pull up if you need to get really close to the venue with your stuff first is HERE
Otherwise we recommend parking at the outdoor Euro or TOTAL carparks which are just off Shudehill and the main ring road. They can be found HERE and you can walk up from there.

Either way we can help carry things into PLANT or down to the yard. There is also a lift which can be used for heavier items if going from the top of the steps down to the yard. Or if you want to leave stuff and go park you car elsewhere first then we can always pop your stuff at your spot whilst you go do this.

    BY FOOT/ BIKE:
If coming by foot and are an INDOOR stall holder, then just come straight to PLANT NOMA via Dantzic street – you come to the very end of the street before it becomes pedestrianised and you will see the entrance on your left (if Shudehill bus station is on your right).

If you are an OUTDOOR stall holder (all food stall holders are outdoors) then come straight down where Hanover street meets Federation Street and you will come right up to Sadler’s Yard. You can find it HERE

We are now open for bookings for 2019’s Complete Printmaker course which runs from February – December 2019.

The morning slots booked up in record time, but we still have places available on the evening sessions from 6pm – 9pm.

The Complete Printmaker is tutored on Monday mornings from 10.00am to 1.00pm or Monday evenings from 6pm – 9pm with additional hours available through to 5.00pm on Mondays when there will be a dedicated Technician on-hand.

The practical make-up of the course will be married up with contextual background and content driven assessment. It will give a good understanding of printmaking and will be the equivalent experience to a traditional fine art first year degree in print. Students will be supported through development of a portfolio and focused body of work.

Comprehensive notes and instruction worksheets will be provided. These are sent out after each process is taught to serve as supporting notes and reminders to enable further independent development through each process. Extra reading material and other sources of inspiration will also be given.

In addition to the 3 hours a week taught sessions each student can take up an extra 4 hours a week free of charge, [60 hours a term), with Technician support available during open access. Students can also take up as many hours as they wish over and above the 4 hours a week self-directed practice by purchasing a Studio Hours card for just Ā£3.00 an hour, (sold in 6 hour cards). You are also given a year’s membership of Hot Bed Press running up to 31st January 2020.

To secure your place we require a £300 deposit. Please call Andy on 0161 743 3111 to book your place on this very popular course.

    Summer Courses 2017

We are really excited to be running our year-long course in Book Arts in 2017.

Run over 2 terms of 15 weeks this course is aimed at artists looking to explore and develop ideas through the form of the artists’ book. The course is not accredited, but students will ā€˜graduate’ with a Hot Bed Press certificate in Book Arts.

Throughout the 30 weeks you will develop knowledge of materials and techniques and will learn how to make a variety of book structures. These range from simple yet fascinating structures to more challenging multi-section hard-bound books. You will also learn how to make a beautiful clam-shell portfolio box to house some of the great books you have made on the course.

As well as equipping you with technical knowledge, the course will challenge you to explore narrative, sequencing, text & image, the relationship between form and content and how you can use the book form to interrogate and push your own practice and ideas.

Recent students from the course have developed the skills and confidence to make editions that have been exhibited and sold at both Liverpool and Manchester Artists’ Book Fair.

The course will also bring in a number of guest tutors to give hands-on introductions to various non-digital printing methods, including risograph, mono printing, letterpress, silk-screen and relief printing to help you develop and realise the ideas that connect the form and content of your books.

The Complete Book Artist will be tutored on Tuesday evenings between 6.00pm and 9.00pm with an additional 4 hours access to the workshop throughout the week. [Open hours are Mondays to Fridays 10am – 5pm plus Thursday evening to 9.00pm and the last Saturday of every month 11am – 4.00pm.]

All students wanting more than 4 hours access per week will also be able to ā€˜top-up’ their hours with usage in the workshop.

    About the tutor:

Sylvia Waltering makes and publishes books as one half of Battenburg Press. She is an artist working with a variety of media, including photography, text, installation and
artists’ books. This will be the fourth year that Sylvia runs the Complete Book Artist at
Hot Bed Press and she also has fifteen years’ teaching experience as a lecturer at
    Manchester School of Art.

Her books and installation work often involve domestic objects and (fictional) collections, exploring their narrative possibilities. Sylvia’s books have been exhibited internationally and her publications are held in private and public collections in the UK, Denmark, Hungary, Australia and the US.

    Exhibitions:

Since the course started back in 2014, CBA students have exhibited collectively at Liverpool and Manchester Art Book Fair. Some students have also developed their practice to exhibit work independently at book fairs in Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol, London and even in Norway.

The 2015 class still meet regularly and continue to work on collaborative book projects. A number of students have gone on to study the Complete Printmaker and Complete Letterpress Printer courses continuing to expand their skills and practice.

Here are some of the things previous participants have said about the course:
