I am sorry , but we are still closed. We had planned to reopen early in June. However, Greater Manchester has seen rapid rises in covid 19 cases, and it is spreading from area to area. It would be unwise to reopen with cases increasing as they are. We also cannot afford to bring staff back from furlough if there is even a remote chance of having to close again.

We remain closed until further notice. We had hoped to be open from 21st June, but cannot say for certain whether this will be the case, with more Government announcements, (due on 14th June), and talk of the third wave, with the new strain/s of coronavirus, plus Medical Advisers/SAGE advising a delay in full easing of lockdown.

We are doing everything we can to keep the workshop strong and to be ready to welcome everyone back, but we have to be very careful how we do this. Reopening too early could seriously damage Hot Bed Press. We have done amazingly to stay viable and have even made lots of improvements, (all without calling upon Arts Council Emergency Funding or loans), but it’s a delicate balance and we cannot take another financial hit.

We hope to reopen shortly after 21st June, but are also braced for the fact that this now may be July. We will announce more after 14th June.

    So sorry for any inconvenience.

There has been lots of work on in recent months, over 14 months in fact. We have new benching for more inking spaces, a new water bath and new acid cabinet, and now 5 new screen beds replacing some old and tired and quite honestly, quirky, some would say frustrating second hand screen beds we did have.

The ceilings and beams have all now been painted and the floor is on the last sections, which would mean that virtually every bit inside Hot Bed Press has had a revamp. We are hoping that everyone sees a bit of the wow factor when they come back in and start using the new kit and benefit from a brighter and better workshop.

We have even had new fencing and a new gate put on the front car park with the help of X1, who are renting some space in the yard and back carpark… and a new temporary mural now adorns the front. We have been hit by coronavirus, but over coming weeks the virus will gradually disappear as we hopefully start winning and eradicating much of the virus, or at least it’s spread.

We will start The Complete Printmaker courses on 10th May. That’s the first thing back after the latest lockdown, as we needed to fit in 30 weeks, and quite frankly, need the money. A few weeks after that once all has settled we aim to reopen to members. It will still be a gradual reopening. Like last time we will have a booking system and limit numbers to ensure all is safe.

The next thing is to catch up on missing courses; with a number postponed from 2020 we will look to honour all those people who kept their bookings and are in credit. We will plan and deliver those courses first before announcing new weekend and evening courses, and will be in touch with everyone who still has credit with us.

Some sense of normality is on the horizon.

    Spring update

    Posted in: News

Hot Bed Press is still closed during the coronavirus pandemic. The latest easing of lockdown announcements are great news; a beer in a pub garden, meeting outside in more than one household, shops to reopen etc. However, due to the nature of our business we are not allowed to reopen to members just yet.

There will be more announcements from the Government on further easing or restrictions to come into place no earlier than 17th May. We will be following the news closely and looking to reopen as soon as it is practical, to do so.

Of course there’s more to it than just opening the doors again and welcoming everyone back. We have to plan and get booking systems back in place, clean the workshop thoroughly again and make sure we have done everything we possibly can to make the workshop safe.

We currently have some staff on furlough or flexi-furlough [and when we are back in are back down to 4 staff now that Kate has moved on]. Planning for the whole staff team to be back in and able to work in a safe working environment is something we are taking every precaution to get right.

When we do reopen it is going to be a steady and gradual reopening to make sure we don’t go to quickly and have to shut again. We are working hard to get things right and be confident on everything running smoothly, but there’s complex decisions and planning to be done over coming weeks.

We will be back better and stronger as an organisation ready to welcome everyone back into an improved Hot Bed Press.

It is likely that we will not reopen until June.

    Lockdown #3

    Posted in: News

    Here we go again.

Hot Bed Press will remain shut until the end of February. We are currently assuming we will be able to reopen around 22nd February but await government announcements. Brace yourself… it may end up being clear to reopen in March.

    We will not be beaten

    We will return

    We will come back stronger

    Watch this space

    Stay safe out there everybody!

  • November2nd

With the announcement on Sunday 1st November that England is to be put into national lockdown from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 2nd December, Hot Bed Press will close it’s doors to members once again for a month.

We are really sorry for any inconvenience. It had been so good to have members coming back in and seeing new prints being created, and just as importantly having the community of artists together and a buzz around the place again.

We will continue to run the Complete Printmaker and Book Arts courses as for this we fit under the educational facilities allowed to carry on through lockdown like colleges and adult education centres. We stay committed to fulfilling these year-long courses.

Unfortunately we cannot run the weekend and evening courses as we have already had too many people pull off the courses, even before lockdown, meaning that we were running courses at a loss. We will postpone all weekend and evening courses until further notice and look to announce courses next year. (For those booked on the already rearranged Copper Sulphate courses we will be in touch.)

Sorry to all members who had got back into the swing of coming in and producing new work. We will keep all screens for an extra month.

Please look out for announcements on our re-opening which will be Wednesday 2nd December as long as lockdown is not extended.

    All the best

    Stay well.

Sean and the team at Hot Bed Press

A major exhibition at Salford Museum & Art Gallery
    26th May to 14th October 2018

by 4 artists working at Hot Bed Press:
Gwilym Hughes, Joey Collins, Claudia Alonso and Lubna Ali

Print UnLtd is an exhibition of works celebrating, challenging and questioning contemporary printmaking.

Supported by Art Collection; University of Salford, Salford Community Leisure and Arts Council England the exhibition was selected by a panel from an open submission call out for works that questioned pre-conceived ideas of what is a print and the conventions of how prints are made, displayed, interpreted and sold.

The 4 selected artists have been working over the past three months to create new bodies of work. The work will be shown in a specially adapted gallery in Salford Museum & Art Gallery.

There is a programme of accompanying workshops and talks at the gallery, starting with all 4 artists working in the gallery in a One Day Pop-up Print Academy on Wednesday 30th May 11.30am – 3.30pm, and available to discuss and show elements of how they created the works on display.

Hot Bed Press is really proud to be involved in this project and to be working in partnership with the University of Salford, Salford Museum & Art Gallery and Salford Community Leisure. We hope that this will be just the start of more major projects with the university and gallery that shed new light on printmaking and serve to make people think about what is a print and how far can we go with printmaking in the modern age.

  • February17th

We have just launched our latest course programme full of special courses, amazing tutors and all run in our fantastic facility. Running from 1st April through to 25th June we have tried to put something on to suit the tastes and needs of everyone. So whether you are new to printmaking or in need of a refresher and a bit of expert knowledge and inspiration this is the place for you.

Our courses are very popular, so much so that we often run extra courses to meet demand.

With courses such as Reduction Screenprint, Caustic Lino, Photo-etching, Building Books, Japanese Woodblock Printing and Adventures in Wooden Type it is a veritable feast of courses suitable for everyone.

Now that we have bought our, rather large, building we are also able to plan for improving our equipment and workshop space. Over the next few months we aim to expand the workshop and to buy new equipment and make improvements that will really start to transform Hot Bed Press.

Go to the courses section of our website for more.

But please beware that courses book up so quickly that it’s best to get in touch straight away. Don’t delay, do it today!
