    Lockdown #3

    Posted in: News

    Here we go again.

Hot Bed Press will remain shut until the end of February. We are currently assuming we will be able to reopen around 22nd February but await government announcements. Brace yourself… it may end up being clear to reopen in March.

    We will not be beaten

    We will return

    We will come back stronger

    Watch this space

    Stay safe out there everybody!

  • November2nd

With the announcement on Sunday 1st November that England is to be put into national lockdown from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 2nd December, Hot Bed Press will close it’s doors to members once again for a month.

We are really sorry for any inconvenience. It had been so good to have members coming back in and seeing new prints being created, and just as importantly having the community of artists together and a buzz around the place again.

We will continue to run the Complete Printmaker and Book Arts courses as for this we fit under the educational facilities allowed to carry on through lockdown like colleges and adult education centres. We stay committed to fulfilling these year-long courses.

Unfortunately we cannot run the weekend and evening courses as we have already had too many people pull off the courses, even before lockdown, meaning that we were running courses at a loss. We will postpone all weekend and evening courses until further notice and look to announce courses next year. (For those booked on the already rearranged Copper Sulphate courses we will be in touch.)

Sorry to all members who had got back into the swing of coming in and producing new work. We will keep all screens for an extra month.

Please look out for announcements on our re-opening which will be Wednesday 2nd December as long as lockdown is not extended.

    All the best

    Stay well.

Sean and the team at Hot Bed Press

A major exhibition at Salford Museum & Art Gallery
    26th May to 14th October 2018

by 4 artists working at Hot Bed Press:
Gwilym Hughes, Joey Collins, Claudia Alonso and Lubna Ali

Print UnLtd is an exhibition of works celebrating, challenging and questioning contemporary printmaking.

Supported by Art Collection; University of Salford, Salford Community Leisure and Arts Council England the exhibition was selected by a panel from an open submission call out for works that questioned pre-conceived ideas of what is a print and the conventions of how prints are made, displayed, interpreted and sold.

The 4 selected artists have been working over the past three months to create new bodies of work. The work will be shown in a specially adapted gallery in Salford Museum & Art Gallery.

There is a programme of accompanying workshops and talks at the gallery, starting with all 4 artists working in the gallery in a One Day Pop-up Print Academy on Wednesday 30th May 11.30am – 3.30pm, and available to discuss and show elements of how they created the works on display.

Hot Bed Press is really proud to be involved in this project and to be working in partnership with the University of Salford, Salford Museum & Art Gallery and Salford Community Leisure. We hope that this will be just the start of more major projects with the university and gallery that shed new light on printmaking and serve to make people think about what is a print and how far can we go with printmaking in the modern age.

We have just launched our latest course programme full of special courses, amazing tutors and all run in our fantastic facility. Running from 1st April through to 25th June we have tried to put something on to suit the tastes and needs of everyone. So whether you are new to printmaking or in need of a refresher and a bit of expert knowledge and inspiration this is the place for you.

Our courses are very popular, so much so that we often run extra courses to meet demand.

With courses such as Reduction Screenprint, Caustic Lino, Photo-etching, Building Books, Japanese Woodblock Printing and Adventures in Wooden Type it is a veritable feast of courses suitable for everyone.

Now that we have bought our, rather large, building we are also able to plan for improving our equipment and workshop space. Over the next few months we aim to expand the workshop and to buy new equipment and make improvements that will really start to transform Hot Bed Press.

Go to the courses section of our website for more.

But please beware that courses book up so quickly that it’s best to get in touch straight away. Don’t delay, do it today!

  • November22nd

    Our eagerly anticipated Under-The-Bed Sale will take place on Friday 2nd December 6pm – 9pm and Saturday 3rd December 11am – 4pm.

This is our annual Christmas sale with hundreds of prints for sale from £5 to £50, thousands of prints in fact. We also launch our 20:20 Print Exchange by selling all the number ones from last year’s exchange for £10 each, as well as a huge selection of past 20:20 prints.

There are plenty of bargains to be had and a wide range of prints from screenprints, etchings, collagraphs, relief prints, photo-etchings, letterpress, book arts and much more. This is your ideal stop to get all your Christmas presents.

We will also be opening up the first floor into the old Cow Lane Studios with artists’ stalls selling an exciting range of prints and printed goods. Come and buy direct from the artists.

Tell your friends and help to support Hot Bed Press. All money raised goes towards new equipment at Hot Bed Press as we split takings between Hot Bed and the artists. Every January we purchase some new kit to improve the facility. It’s a really exciting time for us as we improve and grow this wonderful workshop.

  • October20th

We are really pleased to announce that Hot Bed Press has been successful in our bid to Arts Council Grants for The Arts towards purchasing and developing The Casket Works as our permanent home and creating a major centre for printmaking.

It has just been announced that we are to receive £169,000 towards a £256,000 investment in the building and expansion over the next 12 months.

We are working with Salford City Council on the final details of purchasing the building, which we hope to sign off in the next few weeks. This is a massive step and a huge boost. It will be the catalyst towards further developments and continued growth.

Following the purchase we will be undertaking works on the roof and windows on the first floor to expand in 2017 taking over the old Cow Lane Studios area. We will be creating 8 new artists’ studios, including 4 starter studios for graduates and emerging artists, plus 3 exclusive professional print studios equipped as an etching studio, screenprint studio and new to Hot Bed Press a stone lithography studio. These 3 studios will be available for hire on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and give a different opportunity for artists to work independently in their own space alongside the busier open access print facilities. We will also be expanding the screenprint area, creating a bigger and better etching studio and building a new photo-etching dark room. There will be lots of exciting changes on the way for 2017.

We will of course be announcing more details in coming weeks and months.

It is fantastic to have the support of The Arts Council and the backing of Salford City Council to establish Hot Bed Press as one of the major centres for printmaking in the UK.

On Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd December we will be having our largest print sale to date as a huge fundraiser towards more new equipment for the workshop. Each year we raise around £3,000 that goes directly on new equipment. This year we want to raise even more to be able to add even more equipment. Watch this space!

The sun is out and Hot Bed Press is hot with activity. We have taken over the workshop for 2 full on weeks of courses. This week Intro to Print and Letterpressed Books are busy finishing off their week. It’s been an exhilarating and exhausting week for those on the course, but the energy and enthusiasm are palpable.

Last weekend we welcomed Kip Gresham, (and assistant Alan), as a special guest from The Print Studio in Cambridge bringing us Painterly Photopolymer a really seductive and expressive medium full of tone and atmosphere. This sat perfectly alongside Expressive Letterpress with David Armes bringing his inimitable style and panache to making funky graphic/fine art compositions with wooden letterpress.

This week is just as full with Screenprinting all the way through to CMYK separations and printing with Mandy Tolley and Andy Magee, (our Operations Manager), and Etching through to Photo-etching with Sean Rorke, (our Artistic Director). The screenprint course is full but we have 2 places left on the etching course.

The following weekend on 13th & 14th August we are really pleased to welcome Anne Desmett back, (she was last here way back in 2008, coinciding with her major retrospective at The Whitworth Gallery). Anne brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise on Wood Engraving. This course filled in days of advertising so we are bound to run this again when Anne is next available. Alongside that, (yes it really is all go), we have Expressive Screenprint; showing how to work like Howard Hodgkin, Albert Irvin or Neil Canning. Not your usual painterly screenprintign; this brings a more expressive vibrant layering of colours and brush strokes. we have a few places left on this course.

We round up the Summer School with a special talk and demonstration on Stone Lithography with Lee Turner from Hole Editions in Newcastle on Friday 19th August and then 2 more special guests; Kevin Holdaway will visit us from Leicester to offer a unique take on lino with CMYK lino and Justin Sanders is coming over from Birmigham to run a Mezzotint course; the first time we have run this for many years. The sumptuous working back from black plates to real tonal depth is a marvel. For this last weekend, with 2 weeks to go there are just a few places on both courses.

This special busy summer is part of our drive towards developing our building; The Casket Works into a state of the art print studio. It’s so good to be able to teach people new skills and introduce new processes and ways of working whilst fundraising for Hot Bed Press’s future. This is the unique way we have been able to expand and fully fund our organisation without regular funding, for the last 10 years whilst growing rapidly and improving all the time.

Thanks to everyone who has been on courses and for members for being understanding of our needs to pull out all the stops in moving forwards. Business will be back to normal, whatever that is, on 15th August.

    Sean Rorke – Artistic Director
