New Courses for 2013 out now!

Happy New Year! Happy new courses. We are really pleased to announce that we have now set an exciting new set of courses starting in February.

Table Top Textiles, Painterly Screenprinting and Typewriter Art are straight back in by popular demand and we are also running taster courses again. This time around taster courses will be held as one day courses on Sundays covering Expressive Monoprint, Drypoint/Carborundum, Collagraphs and Relief Printing.

We are really pleased to welcome back letterpress courses to Hot Bed Press. We had a brief break from them for the last programme. Sadly Graham Moss of Incline Press has ‘retired’ from teaching to concentrate on personal projects. We wish him all the best and thank him for his untiring support and expertise in helping us set up the letterpress here at Hot Bed. We have been working towards getting the right people in to fill his considerable boots.

Happily we have managed to get Elizabeth Willow, (our book artist in residence for 2012), to start running letterpress for beginners. A Taste of Letterpress will run on 17th February. We have taken the opportunity also to expand how we teach letterpress and have invited David Armes, (our typesetter in residence for 2012), to run a Letterpress for Designers course introducing how to incorporate images and typeset text and print CD covers.

We are also really pleased to introduce Life Printing. Learn to print directly from the life model in this unique course over 4 evenings covering direct monoprint, drypoint and waterless litho.

There’s so much more with Photo-screen, Book Making For Artists, (level 1), Etching, Presentation Box Making, Mezzotint and Photo-polymer Printing.

Bookings are already coming in and places are strictly limited. For more details contact Sean or Andy on 0161 743 311 or by e-mail at

Thanks once again to our sponsors; Turners of Stockport, Screenstretch, Ratchfords Book Arts Suppliers and Intaglio Printmaker of London. They help us to offer the best materials we can on every course.

THANKS to all those who came to The Manchester Contemporary to see what many people said was our ‘best in show’ appearance, (though we have not yet received our rosette!).

It was great to be involved again, and indeed invited back. It was a very successful show and we sold over £1,000 worth of prints with 90% of all sales going to the artists. there were many more connections made and a few artists have potential contacts for the selling of more work. Well done to all who showed with us. If you missed it a mini-version of the show will be going up at Hot Bed Press next week with even more work in the browser…

You can also see new book arts with some truly beautiful books by Lucy May Schofield, Gemma Lacey, Oliver Flude, Irena Przbyl and Elizabeth Willow.

We are looking to gradually improve the exhibition area  and have a changing display of work and a burgeoning browser. You are all welcome to submit work to our browser, and yes we do get sales; we take 25% commission on anything sold in-house. All members are invited to put work in the browser, (providing it is professionally mounted, (window or float mounted), backed and wrapped. See Sean or Andy if you are interested.

It was a hectic night here on Wednesday, with The Radical Print Shop taking over creating much mayhem and fun.

Chaotic prints ensued. The Radical Print Shop still has a presence here too with work by Lois Gilbert and whilst most people left jealously guarding their great clutches of prints, evidence of some of randomly juxtaposed images and text survive and will be up on the wall too.

Many thanks all who come along, especially to Sue Shaw, Lois Gilbert, David Armes and Elizabeth Willow who all gave their time to make this another new event that will also re-emerge at Hot Bed next year no doubt, if the comments and requests from the 20 people who came to Hot Bed last night is anything to go by.

If you would like to get involved in other Radical Print Shop events, they are running some free workshops FREE workshops at The People’s History Museum & The John Rylands Library on Saturday 13th October 2012. Read on…

As part of The Manchester Weekender Hot Bed Press will be working in conjunction with The People’s History Museum and The John Rylands Library to run drop in workshops on the idea of protest and democracy through print.

    10.00am – 1.00pm at The People’s History Museum

Screenprinted posters and banners. Using pre-prepared screens a mix-and-match printing session will offer participants hands on poster printing in multi-colour; each person making up their own printed message. Everyone can come and have a go, young and old. Each participant will go away with their own full colour poster. A selection of posters and banners produced on the day will also go up on display.

2.00pm – 5.00pm at The John Rylands Library

Letterpress demonstrations and printing sessions. Through pre-set type chases there will be selections of printed pamphlets/leaflets to print and hand out. Printed on the Albion presses and on portable Adana presses provided by Hot Bed Press everyone can have a hand-on experience of printing. There will also be a book artist on hand to show different folds and ways of making pamphlets and mini-books.

These are drop in sessions. No booking necessary. Ideal for young and old, and even middle aged!

It’s that time of year again when we start planning our 20:20 Print Exchange which has grown over the past few years since setting it up in 2009.

Last year 257 artists from 19 print studios took part and produced over 6,400 prints. We are expecting at least as many artists this year!

Hot Bed Press members are invited to take part. We are looking for 10, 20 or 30 artists from Hot Bed Press and will take commitment on a first come first served basis.

Each artist is asked to produce an edition of 25 prints in any medium on paper 20cm x 20cm. Cost per artist is £10.00. Works have to be produced by October.

In return you will all receive a random portfolio of prints from artists across the UK and Ireland in a specially printed 20:20 box.

We have already heard from print workshops the length and breadth of the country wishing to take part again, so expect it to be another big event. The 20:20 Exhibition is currently up at The Bluecoat Studios as part of a tour of 257 prints – one from every artist from the 2011 exchange. It is hoped that this years exchange will tour throughout 2013 to various venues.
