Hot Bed Press is introducing artists’ demonstrations to show exciting methods and new approaches to printmaking. Get a taste for something new and open your eyes to a different way of working. The artists will demonstrate their methods of working and inspire you with examples of work. These will undoubtedly be lively and intriguing evenings.

These demonstrations are ‘Pay on the Door’ events.
They cannot be booked in advance.

    Devoré Print

    (masterclass demo)

    Artist: Kiran Williams

    Tuesday 8th November
    7.00pm – 8.30pm

This is a process where part of a fabric is burned away (or devoured). A design can be screen-printed or paste can be applied freehand. Once dry it is then ironed or baked. The paste burns the fibres and when they are rubbed out of the fabric it leaves thin areas, creating a different tonal effect. It may be thought of almost as etching on fabric.

Cost £10.00 to non-members / £5.00 to Hot Bed Press members

    Vaseline Etch

    (masterclass demo)

    Artist: Martin Kochany

    Tuesday 6th December
    7.00pm – 8.30pm

This process has been developed by Martin as a unique method of achieving a subtle soft ground aquatint, giving expressive painterly tone in a simple and immediate manner. You will also be shown how to screen the Vaseline to get a photographic quality, experiment with lift grounds and layer up the image.

Cost £10.00 to non-members / £5.00 to Hot Bed Press members

The first 3 workshops are already full, but we do still have places available on some of our forthcoming workshops.

Places are still up for grabs on Mezzotint, End Papers and The Art of Etching & we are pleased to announce a 2nd Poster Printing workshop running on Wednesday evenings from the 9th – 30th November.

If you are into tonal drawing or like the idea of working images out from a velvety black background then mezzotint is the workshop for you. A centuries old technique and beautiful way of producing images of high chiaroscuro suggesting the drama and light of Caravaggio it’s an rare opportunity to learn this inspiring technique.  For contemporary ‘mezzotinting’ at it’s highest level look at the work of Chuck Close.

Please call or email the studio as soon as possible to secure your place.

It’s time for our annual 20:20 print exchange and we’re hoping that you’ll get involved in this great opportunity to make and exchange prints with other artists and print studios.

It’s easy to get involved. In fact it’s as easy as 1,2,3…

    1. First, drop us an email or give us a call to let us know that you want to take part and what print technique you plan to use.
    2. Next time you’re in the workshop, pay the £10 submission fee.
    3. Get cracking to produce your edition of prints on paper cut to 20cm x 20cm.

    It’s as easy as that.

In return you’ll get a lovely box of prints from other artists.

We have 11 people signed up so far, meaning just 9 places for Hot Bed Press members remaining. So don’t hesitate! Drop us a line and get involved.

Not a Hot Bed Press member? Do you work from a different printmakers’ studio and think they’d like to take part in the 20:20? Please ask your studio manager to get in touch with Sean or Andy on 0161 743 3111 about joining the ever growing list of workshops nationwide who take part in this great event.

Here’s a selection of the prints exchange in last year’s 20:20. You can see the whole collection from various workshops across the UK on our Flickr page.

The studio may seem a little busier over the next couple of months as we welcome 20 students from Manchester Met who have taken membership over the summer months whilst building work is going on at the University.

The majority of them will be focusing on letterpress and book arts so if you are planning to use the letterpress equipment, it’s worth letting us know.

They have also expressed an interest in screenprinting, so please book your beds in advance and we’ll make sure that your bed is saved for you.

It may be that it doesn’t have a great impact on usage, but I thought it better to give you the heads up on the off chance. We’re really happy to be building links and invite new students and their ideas into the workshop.

  • August4th

The workshop will be closed to members for our annual Summer School during the week Mon 15th – Mon 22nd August.

So please don’t turn up that week as we won’t be open for you to use the workshop.

Keyholder’s are welcome, although mainly out of hours as most of the workshops will be running between 10am and 5pm every day Mon-Fri.

We will reopen on the 22nd for business as usual.

Hot Bed Press are proud to announce that we will once again be organizing the Manchester Artists’ Book Fair to be held at the Holden Gallery, Manchester on Saturday 22nd October 2011, from 11am – 6pm.

Last years event saw 43 stands showing artists’ books, zines and the works of small publishers from all around the UK all mingling alongside each other and the many visitors were able to see a performance by Carson & Miller as well as buying beautiful works direct from the artists and makers.

This year, the second year Hot Bed Press will be working with MMU to run the event, we aim to make it bigger and better with up to 50 stands including a zine annex off the main hall. There will also be workshops and demonstrations for all to enjoy and participate in. We are keen to build on last year’s endeavours and to hold another fair filled with fantastic book arts and associated events.

The gallery can accommodate between 40 and 50 tables, available on a first come first served basis. The tables will measure 6’ x 2’3” and be provided with two chairs and a tablecloth. Fixing to the walls is not allowed; it is therefore recommended that if you need extra display systems these are situated on the table tops.

How could we resist promoting such a noble cause!

On 4th September, HBP Studio Manager, Christine Evans will be taking part in the Christie Manchester 100 Bike Ride. This means 100 miles in 1 day! I’m exhausted just thinking about it. She reports that so far the training is going well and all the money raised will go to Christies who do such wonderful work in supporting people and their families affected by cancer.

This message directly from Christine :

If you’d like to, you can donate online with a credit or debit card – you can do this on my JustGiving page, here’s the link: http://www.justgiving.com/pedalpowerwithchristine

JustGiving sends your donation straight to The Christie and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you’re a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. I hope you’ll join me in supporting The Christie.

Thanks very much and lots of love,
    Christine
