19th Century Photographic Processes

This demo is not currently on the schedule

Artist: John Brewer

About the demonstration:

Enter the wonderful world of photographic printmaking. Traditional processes like cyanotypes, Van Dyke Brown Printing, Gum Bichromate and wet plate collodion printing have come back into vogue having been kept alive by dedicated enthusiasts and professionals. Learn a bit of the history of these techniques and see first hand how they are made.

Not to be missed! Guest artist John Brewer will show how to make Van Dyke Brown prints, cyanotype and gum bichromate prints using basic equipment. This will be followed by a wetplate demo. Wetplate collodion printing is not done in many places in the country and is a very special process where the metal plate is the final image and is glossy and atmospheric. John is one of the leading experts in this and runs exclusive courses in his studio in Manchester. See www.johnbrewerphotography.com for examples of his work.

John was born and grew up in south east England and now lives in the City of Manchester. He first became interested in photography at the age of eleven in the 1970's and is both self taught and formally educated. John has had work published in several magazines & books, has worked with an award winning theatre company and his work is in private collections worldwide. He has also exhibited in the UK and abroad.
