About the course:

This course gives students the opportunity to learn how to carve a simple 3 colour woodblock print, inspired by and referencing the Japanese decorative patterned papers of ‘Chiyogami’. During day two of the course you will learn how to print your carved wood blocks in various colour combinations using watercolour pigments and rice glue. Using a hand held barren press to print on Japanese Washi paper, the set of prints created will go on to make the covers for 4 Japanese stab sewn bindings on day three. This course will cover the techniques of making a simple patterned mokuhanga print and using those prints for traditional Japanese bookbinding, to create a series of 4 stunning stab sewn books, incorporating multiple skills you take forward in your own printmaking/bookmaking practice.
